Migrant workers who saved woman from sinkhole thank S'poreans for fundraiser, say they'll use money for kids' education Heartwarming. At a meet-and-greet event on Aug. 10, the migrant workers who helped rescue a woman from the Tanjong Katong sinkhole were given handwritten letters and small gifts from members of the public. They were also handed a cheque for S$70,805.05, to be split between the seven of them. The money was raised after local charity ItsRainingRaincoats launched a fundraiser on Jul. 28 to recognise the workers for their bravery. Thanked Singaporeans Speaking in a mix of Tamil and English, the workers expressed their gratitude to Singaporeans. The experience has felt surreal, and their families back home are very happy and proud, they said. Ganesan Veerasekar, 32, enthused about how "honest and friendly" Singaporeans are. The outpouring of public support was entirely unexpected, and they merely reacted the way they did to save a life. He also called Singapore his "second homeland". Those with young children said they hoped to help provide for their children's education. But Anbazhagan Velmurugan, 26, said he would use the money to repay his loans. He paid over S$10,000 in agency fees just to secure a job in Singapore, he said. He has so far only worked in Singapore for a year and a half. Care packages and cards A number of small businesses and individuals turned up at the event to give the workers cards, letters, and small gifts. Local food distributor SP Muthiah & Sons brought care packages containing essentials like rice and oil, as well as snacks from India. They hope to give the workers "the warmth of home" with these familiar products, they said. Others brought cakes, muffins, and even FairPrice vouchers. They were also previously gifted "MOM Appreciation Coins", or ACE coins. Related story Top image by Ilyda Chua
