Edwin Goh Quit Smoking With The Help Of Crocheting; Used To Smoke A Pack Of Cigarettes A Day At His Worst "[I'm] not even getting tempted when I see people smoking now."
No part of this story or photos can be reproduced without permission from 8days.sg. Admitting to any form of addiction is not easy, but ex-Mediacorp actor Edwin Goh is also not one to bow down to challenges. Yesterday, the 31-year-old opened up on Instagram about how his hobby, crocheting, has "saved [him] from a toxic relationship with nicotine", and that he used to identify cigarettes as his "best friend". "It was there for me when I felt anxious, it was there when I felt stressed, it was there whenever I'm alone," he wrote. Things took a turn after his fiancée, local actress Rachel Wan, introduced him to crocheting. Edwin recalled that he couldn't wrap his head around the craft when Rachel first started teaching him, but he still decided to surprise her with a crochet scarf for her first birthday with him. And when he sat in front of his computer studying a YouTube tutorial, that was the moment he felt something different. "Crochet has a meditative quality, the motivation to complete the gift kept me focused, while the act of crocheting kept my hands busy," said Edwin. "The hands that once reached for a puff [of cigarette] or a sip [of alcohol] are occupied with something that brings fulfilment and purpose, not just another hit of dopamine," he added. When 8days.sg reached out to the actor, he admitted that his smoking habits used to be "really bad". "The worst was a pack a day," he revealed. Edwin used to also get panic attacks at public events, which was when he would excuse himself for a puff. The actor divulged that he started smoking when he was really young — around 14 years old — and emphasised that he would "never recommend anyone to pick up the habit of smoking or vaping". He's been wanting to share about this journey since he was still living in Australia, but it took him a long time to draft up a post to talk about it. Edwin relocated to Aussie with Rachel in 2023 and they moved back to Singapore in April this year. The actor now rejoices that he's kicked the habit of smoking entirely. "I’ve been completely clean now! Not even getting tempted whenever I see people smoking," he says. In his post, Edwin also shared that he was "in a really dark place in 2022" and that was the time he'd usually isolate himself in his room, watching shows while drinking and smoking. Edwin's brush with the law in 2022 comes to mind — that year, he was arrested for drink driving and was fined S$6,500 and banned from driving for three years. However, Edwin clarified that he was not referring to that incident and declined to elaborate. "I'll save that for another [time]," he replied on WhatsApp with a smiling emoticon. Whatever it is, we're glad you've gained control of your life again, Edwin!
