BEIJING, Nov 8 — President Xi Jinping expressed deep satisfaction at meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, highlighting the strengthening ties between China and Malaysia.

Reflecting on recent diplomatic advancements, Xi emphasised the significance of 50 years of China-Malaysia diplomatic relations.

"I am very happy to meet the Prime Minister again,” Xi said, acknowledging the landmark anniversary celebrated this year in bilateral relations.

He recalled Malaysian King Sultan Ibrahim’s recent state visit to China, which, Xi noted, enabled crucial discussions on advancing bilateral relations.

"I had a candid and friendly exchange with His Majesty, and we reached a broad consensus on promoting high-level development of our relations,” he remarked during a courtesy call by Anwar at the Great Hall of People yesterday.

Xi also extended greetings to Sultan Ibrahim, underscoring his respect and friendship.

Xi pointed to Anwar’s visit in March as foundational for a new era of bilateral cooperation, saying, "We reached an important consensus on building a China-Malaysia community with a shared future and outlined a blueprint for the new era.”

Over the past year, he noted, both countries have maintained close exchanges and cooperation across various sectors, with the shared future project yielding beneficial outcomes for both nations.

As Malaysia emerges as a vital market and a key player in the Global South, Xi underscored the extensive common interests shared between the two nations, particularly in trade, development, and regional cooperation.

"This year marks both the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the China-Malaysia Friendship Year. Over these decades, our trade has increased nearly 1,000-fold, and our friendship has shown we are good neighbours, good friends, and partners in development,” Xi said.

Looking forward, Xi sees China-Malaysia relations at a promising new starting point.

"The future of our relations is bright,” he said. "China is ready to work with Malaysia to advance our shared future project practically, making new contributions to the prosperity and stability of both countries and the region.”

Expressing hope for continued collaboration, Xi concluded: "Let us work together to build a more glorious future for our countries and the broader region.” — Bernama

China's Principle Of Shared Future Inspires Malaysia To Participate In BRICS -- PM Anwar

From Massita Ahmad

SHANGHAI, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- The principle of the policy of shared future is well received by countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Global South, and that is precisely the reason why Malaysia agreed to participate in BRICS, Prime Minister Datuk Sri Anwar Ibrahim said.

Speaking at the opening of the 7th China International Import Expo (CIIE) held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC) here, Anwar aspired and described China President Xi Jinping’s recent address at the recent BRICS conference in Kazan as “spectacular”.

Xi, Anwar said, urged, in the spirit of a shared future be adopted against forces of discord and protectionism, that “we must build the community with a shared future, to uphold global peace, global security, and to share the experience, the expertise, the technologies with the world.”

This year, Malaysia has been honoured as the “Country of Honour” at the 7th CIIE, held from today until Nov 10. It carries a theme of “New Era Shared Future.”

Anwar was given the privilege of speaking immediately after his Chinese counterpart, Premier Li Qiang, followed by leaders from five other countries: France, Nicaragua, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, and Uzbekistan.

The prime minister also took note of the address by Li that the phenomenal success registered by China is an example of not only governance and correct policies but also a promising attitude to ensure that “trade, investments and economic prosperity” will be beneficial to the international community.

“This is, of course, not an easy remark because it is contrary to the expression of many powerful economies of the world.

“... And that is why I think I would join many of my colleagues in commending China and its leadership for this departure from very obscure, condescending and unfair trading practices,” he said.

Anwar lauded the CIIE, which provides an opportunity not only for Chinese companies but also companies throughout the world, including smaller companies and medium enterprises, to showcase their capacity and capabilities and attract new investments.

“So multicultural cooperation for free trade and sustainability goals must be used as a tool to advance global progress equitably instead of as a weapon to quell competition, promote unfair advantage or create conflict,” he said.

The CIIE is an initiative by the Chinese government to provide a platform for countries involved in its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to promote and export their products and services to China.

Touching on the ASEAN chairmanship next year, Anwar said Malaysia aimed to enhance regional cooperation and inclusive rules-based regional framework.

“In this vein, we would like to reciprocate the forward-looking, shared future principle promoted by China so that when we organise the ASEAN-GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council), we also include what is called ASEAN plus GCC plus China Summit,” he said.

The summit is expected to be held in May 2025.

Anwar added that it will be of great consequence to the trajectory of regional growth and “will make a significant contribution to moving the needle on greater global parity in economic trade investments and economic advancement.”

As the world’s fifth largest economy, Anwar said ASEAN, too, has the potential to be a driving force for inclusive socio-economic growth that paves the way for an unprecedented era of sustainable, shared prosperity.

“We are leaving no stone unturned, as you have seen here in China, in promoting good governance and combating and rooting out corruption, as well as implementing socio-economic and industrial reform agendas.

“We continue to be inspired, Premier Li Qiang, by your extraordinary success in battling poverty, which clearly signifies a major achievement in social reengineering,” said the prime minister.

Anwar is on a working visit to China from Nov 4 to 7 at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart, Li, to attend the 7th CIIE in Shanghai, a modern international metropolis.

He arrived Monday (Nov 4), marking Shanghai as his first stop before proceeding to Beijing.

Anwar is accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, and Minister of Human Resources Steven Sim Chee Keong.

At the 500,000-square-metre NECC, Anwar will later open the Malaysia Pavilion and the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) Pavilion.

A total of 68 Malaysian companies are participating in this year’s CIIE.

China has been Malaysia’s largest trading partner globally for 15 consecutive years since 2009.

China warns Malaysia to immediately cease activities in oil-rich waters off Sarawak, says report
This comes just three months after Anwar Ibrahim hailed China as a 'true friend'.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has described China a 'true friend'.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has described China a 'true friend'.
Beijing has demanded Malaysia to immediately halt all activities in an oil-rich area off Sarawak waters, despite softer diplomatic tones from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in an attempt to soothe its giant neighbour amid overlapping claims in the South China Sea.

The demand was made in a protest note sent to the Malaysian embassy in China last week, according to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, which also published the document.

The document accused Malaysia of encroaching on areas covered by the 10-dash line, Beijing's controversial map showing its claims to sovereignty in the South China Sea.

It also expressed Beijing's displeasure over Malaysia's oil and gas exploration activities near the Luconia Shoals, also known as Luconia Reefs.

The area is known to Malaysians as Gugusan Beting Raja Jarum, but referred by China as "Nankang Ansha" and "Beikang Ansha".

This is despite the fact that the reefs are only 100 km from Sarawak and almost 2,000 km from mainland China.

"The Chinese side, once again, urges the Malaysian side to genuinely respect the territorial sovereignty and maritime interests of China [and] immediately stop the above mentioned activity," the Inquirer quotes from the note by the Chinese foreign ministry.

MalaysiaNow has asked Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan for comment.

Malaysia and China are among seven states surrounding the South China Sea which have laid territorial claims. The others are Brunei, Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.

China has been flexing its military muscle in the area in a move designed to shore up its territorial claim over the entire South China Sea.

Malaysia's national oil firm Petronas operates in the exclusive economic zone as well as the Luconia Reefs, which China claims as its territory based on the so-called "nine-dash line", which it later "updated" to become the 10-dash line to claim an additional territory near Taiwan.

The nine-dash line had already been declared illegal in 2016 by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.

China's latest warning came less than three months after Anwar described China a "true friend" in what appeared to be an attempt to appease China's uncompromising stance on its territorial claims.

"People say, well, Malaysia is a growing economy. Don’t let China abuse its privilege and extort from the country. I said no. To the contrary, we want to benefit from one another, we want to learn from one another and we want to profit from this engagement," Anwar said during Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang’s visit on June 20.

Last year, Anwar caused outrage after he suggested that his government was prepared to negotiate China's territorial claims in the South China Sea.

"I stressed... that Malaysia sees the area as Malaysian territory therefore Petronas will continue its exploration activities there," Anwar said when briefing the Dewan Rakyat on his official visit to China.

"But if China feels this is their right, Malaysia is open to negotiations."

The statement drew immediate condemnation from the opposition, with former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin saying Malaysia's territorial rights were not open to negotiation "even if it is claimed by China".

"The prime minister's statement about Malaysia's openness to negotiate over its territorial rights has exposed it to the risk of a threat to its national sovereignty," the Perikatan Nasional chairman had said.

This was followed by Wisma Putra clarifying that Anwar's comment meant Malaysia would like all issues related to the South China Sea to be resolved peacefully.
