Sunday’s Sha Tin race meeting to be held behind closed doors, with all proceeds to fire victims
Sunday’s Sha Tin race meeting will be held behind closed doors as a mark of respect for the victims of this week’s tragic Tai Po fire. All gross income from the meeting, which the Jockey Club estimates to be around HK$70 million, will be donated to support those affected by the tragedy, while Saturday’s Mark Six draw has been postponed to next Tuesday. “The Hong Kong Jockey Club is deeply saddened by the loss of so many lives during the tragic fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, as well as the injuries and personal loss suffered by many others,” the Jockey Club said in a statement. “The club has announced its first tranche donation of HK$100 million through its Charities Trust to support victims and the families of the deceased. “The club has also reviewed all of its operations to ensure that in every aspect of its activities we recognise the terrible impact of this tragedy.” Sunday’s meeting, initially scheduled to be Chevalier Cup Day, will be open only to owners, stewards, voting members and their invited guests, while there will be no sponsors. Stewards, officials, trainers and jockeys will observe a minute’s silence, jockeys will wear black armbands as a mark of respect and there will be no live music. Members and public customers with table or seating reservations in racecourses and off-course betting branches will be refunded, while all Mark Six tickets sold will remain valid. The Jockey Club earlier announced a string of relief measures for victims of the blaze.
